Brass exhibits exceptionally good ductility (the best among brasses) and relatively high strength. It has excellent machinability, is easy to weld, and demonstrates remarkable resistance to common forms of corrosion; however, it is prone to stress-corrosion cracking. Brass strip is an alloy of copper and zinc, named for its yellow color.
Features and Application Scope
Brass strips exhibit excellent mechanical properties and wear resistance, making them suitable for manufacturing precision instruments, ship parts, gun and cannon shells, and more. When struck, brass produces a pleasing sound; thus, musical instruments such as gongs, cymbals, bells, and horns are all made from brass. According to their chemical composition, brass is classified into two types: ordinary brass and special brass.
(1) Ordinary brass is a binary alloy composed of copper and zinc. Due to its excellent ductility, it is well-suited for manufacturing sheets, bars, wires, tubes, and deep-drawn parts such as condenser tubes, radiator tubes, and mechanical and electrical components. Brass with an average copper content of 62% and 59% can also be cast; this type is referred to as casting brass.
(2) Special brasses are produced by adding elements such as aluminum, silicon, manganese, lead, and tin to copper-zinc alloys in order to achieve higher strength, better corrosion resistance, and superior casting properties. Examples include lead brass, tin brass, aluminum brass, silicon brass, and manganese brass.
